Lucia Vagos

With a wealth of experience, Lucia served as the Assistant Strength and Conditioning (S&C) Coach for WAFLW East Fremantle Sharks, contributing to two Premiership cups over three years. Currently, she holds the prestigious position of Head of High Performance for WAFLW East Fremantle Sharks. Lucia also led NRL RISE state teams as the Head S&C coach, guiding them through interstate competitions at the national level. For the past three years, she has coached diverse athletes in both at MH Performance locations both north and south of the river in Perth.

Lucia’s personal journey as a once-uneducated, injury-prone cheerleading athlete shaped her commitment to the transformative power of strength programs. Under the mentorship of Coach Naomi Price, Lucia experienced firsthand the positive impact of coaching beyond the weight room. Inspired to help others overcome challenges, she emphasizes the role of a strength coach as a powerful force in an athlete’s life, providing crucial support during tough times. Lucia’s own experience with doubt and self-sabotage fuels her dedication to empowering athletes to overcome similar obstacles and reach their full potential. Today, she stands as a testament to the impact of mentorship and strives to make a positive difference in the lives of athletes every day.

Lucia affectionately known as Lulu to many is a free spirit who challenges traditional ways and is always finding ways to improve her knowledge and understanding of the Strength and Conditioning world.

For the last 3 years I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside Lulu to develop the best program in the country at the East Fremantle Football Club which has seen the athletes go from strength to strength. During this time Lulu has overseen the 2022 WAFLW Rogers Cup and the 2023 WAFLW League side win Premierships along with 2 players drafted in the AFLW system with an anticipated 6 more over the next 2 years including this year’s draft. Lulu hold high standards for the athletes, staff, volunteers and parents to adhere which results in on field performance.

Through training with Lucia at MH Performance I have noticed an increase in speed, agility, conditioning, acceleration and power and the focus on injury prevention has improved my performance on field as well as recovery post training.

MH Performance is not my first small class gym that I have gone to. I found that at MH Performance the trainers really care about you as a whole and look into not only your goals, form and fitness, but also all other aspects such as nutrition, sleep, work and other stressors. They provide evidence based advice and are able to provide rationales for what they suggest.

With regards to the actual training, I have benefitted greatly with Lucia’s coaching. She keeps a close eye on all her athletes and provides personalised cues and exercise options based on athletic abilities and form. Lucia has a range of cues and techniques to ensure all athletes are performing not only with a “good enough” technique, but at pique technique so that we can train effectively and safely. I have struggled greatly with hip mobility, poor posture and shin splints. Lucia ensures that there are exercises in place to build up the smaller neglected muscles to ensure a balanced training specifically catered to me (which still aligns with my desire to improve on the footy field).

Lucia provides guidance and provides rationales into all exercises and how these translate onto the footy field. As an aspiring WAFLW player I have utilised the provided gym programs in the past but I found I was either just “doing” the exercise without having that mind-muscle connection, doing it incorrectly or not feeling confident with the movement that I would stagnate at a low weight/intensity due to fear of damaging my body. With Lucia’s eagle eye she catches you if you drop intensity or form instantly – this has given me confidence to go up in weights, heights (eg box jumps) and intensity. It has also improved my personal drive and motivation. I have noticed my improvement on the football field and other players and coaches have also commented on aspects such as improved explosiveness and agility.
